An Athlete Shows Thanks for A New Chance at An Active Life

When Chris Pates needed spine surgery, surgeons in his hometown in Connecticut gave him discouraging news: "We can help you, but you will never return to your athletic lifestyle." As karate, snowboarding, and running were some of his greatest joys, Chris was devastated. "It was as if I was being sidelined for the rest of my life," he says. A friend suggested he come to Hospital for Special Surgery, and thankfully, he did. From the start of his experience, Chris knew that HSS was different from other hospitals. "I found a partnership at every level," says Chris. After successful treatment, Chris is back to all the athletic activities he loves and has celebrated his recovery by returning to competitive martial arts, distance running, and cycling. "Excellence doesn't just happen by chance – and at HSS, excellence happens each and every day," Chris reflects. The generous support of donors ensures that Special Surgery can continue to provide the best patient care, producing happy outcomes for patients like Chris.

Giving Back in Appreciation for Excellent Care

Mr. Quatrale gives out of respect for his doctor, Dr. Thomas P. Sculco. He was first a patient 18 years ago and still appreciates the benefits of his first experience. "I like Dr. Sculco very much and appreciate all the patience he had with me," says Frank. "I have much admiration for Dr. Sculco and the work of the Hospital." His wife, Yvonne, comments, "My husband was a patient many years ago and has never stopped being grateful to Special Surgery. Our son had surgery at HSS also, and we were so impressed by the excellence of care he received. The staff is excellent too." The Quatrales both agree, "Any donation is great, because it's for a terrific cause. We donate so that organizations like HSS can continue to run and give care to its patients."

National Basketball Association Supports Research at HSS

In 2010, the National Basketball Association (NBA) pledged $250,000 over five years to support the HSS Cartilage Registry. Through the Registry, HSS can collect pre- and post-operative data, as well as follow-up information, on those patients undergoing cartilage repair procedures at the Hospital. This comprehensive system of data tracking allows the Hospital to address pressing research questions in cartilage injury, many of which are direct consequences of sports. Thanks to the NBA's generous gift, Special Surgery can continue to amass clinical data. Gifts like the NBA's contribute directly to valuable research aimed at further improving treatments that ultimately ensure our patients receive the best care possible.
