Currently, the Patient Education Department offers pre-operative classes for patients undergoing spine surgery, total hip replacements and total knee replacements. Classes are taught by Patient Educators, who are registered nurses, in collaboration with physical therapists and social work case managers. In coming to our classes you will learn the general overview as to what to expect when coming in for surgery at HSS as well as exercises and information pertaining to your specific surgery. Classes provide detailed information on what to bring to the hospital the day of surgery, what to expect the morning of surgery, recovery and pain management.
Total Hip and total knee classes are held Monday through Friday and Spine classes are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Classes are generally scheduled on your pre-operative testing day, through your surgeon’s office. You are encouraged to invite family members and friends, who might be assisting during you recovery period, to join you in attending the class.
